What Horizontal Directional Drilling Is
Horizontal directional drilling is a method of placing material such
as conduit or wire in the ground without having to dig a continuous trench.
The actual bore is performed by pushing and drilling a series of drill rods
into the ground led by drill head. This drill head makes use of a duck-billed
drill bit which allows the bore to be steered by pushing on the rods.
When the desired bore path is reached the rods are then drilled (rotated)
which keeps the drill moving in the direction it is pointed. An electronic
device is stored in the drill head which emits a signal allowing the operators
to track the pitch, roll, and depth of the drill head. This sophisticated
system allows for incredibly accurate shots at very long distances.
After completing this pilot bore, there are two main methods of actually
placing the product. The first is to actually push the drill head up towards
the surface and out of the ground. The alternative is to dig a 'catch pit'
where the drill head is pushed into an open hole that has been dug. At this
stage a backreamer is attached to the string of drill rods and the product
that is being placed is attached to the backreamer. The rods are then pulled
back by the machine while the backreamer enlarges the drillhole to accommodate
the material that is being towed back and into place. Upon completion of the
pullback, the product is left in place and the only rehabilitation left is
found in the areas where the drill enters and exits the ground.
This method is an effective way of installing a product under roads,
rivers, buildings, railroad tracks, and other congested areas such as public
parks or schools.
Hydrovac Services
In today's climate of safety awareness and environmental consciousness,
hydro-excavation is quickly becoming a method of choice in the construction
industry.
Hydrovac trucks rely on two main components. First, high pressure jets
of water are used to loosen the material that is being excavated. Second,
a very strong vacuum hose sucks the loosened material and excess water into a
large holding tank. Hydrovac trucks can be used to excavate almost any type
of material that typically needs to be excavated on a construction site including
hard packed clay, sand, pitrun, and gravel.
BRT currently maintains three hydrovac units within its fleet of equipment,
with one truck equipped with a flusher system.
Our hydrovac units are available for use year round. Hourly prices depend
on season and availability. Please contact us for information.
